Russell Tovey, best known for his roles in Being Human, Him & Her and recently, Looking has been cast as a series regular for the series upcoming second season and the description for his character, Harry Doyle certainly sounds tantalising from showrunner, Josh Safran ....
“Part Thomas Crown, part grown-up Artful Dodger, the mysterious Harry can be anything to anybody—and is just as likely to seduce your husband as he is to pick his pocket when it’s over.”
Further descriptions label Harry as a "mischievous gadabout" amongst other things but given that Quantico is little more than a Grey's Anatomy and Homeland mashup and admittedly not anywhere as good as those shows were in their heydays, is Tovey's casting really enough to entice me in? On paper, Harry sounds like a compelling character to watch and after the deserved criticism that the show has gotten for previous gay characters, maybe Harry's presence will be a step in the right direction. Not to mention the fact that I absolutely love Russell Tovey, so he's a great coup for the show.
However, the show did destroy a lot of good faith with LGBT viewers in it's first season. First of all, there was Simon (Tate Ellington) who pretended to be gay for reasons that never made sense and while the second half of the season gave him a redemption arc/heroic sacrifice, the damage had been done with viewers along with having Rick Cosnett's character, Elias who actually was gay turn out to be a traitor who ended up killing himself as well. There was also a lesbian character named Hannah (Eliza Coupe), the ex-wife of Ryan Booth (Jake McLaughlin) but even her character didn't last too long. One can only hope that Safran has learned from past mistakes with the imminent arrival of Harry Doyle.
